Dharmendra ( Hindi : धर्मेन्द्र , Dharmendra ; born December 8, 1935 in Phagwara , Punjab ; real name: Dharam Singh Deol ) is an Indian film actor.

Life

He worked for an American drilling company before being spotted in a Filmfare talent competition and moving to Mumbai . In 1960 he made his film debut. Dharmendra was cast in romantic lover roles, targeting the female audience. He had first success in Bimal Roy's Bandini (1963) with Nutan . He later starred alongside Meena Kumari in a number of films . His role in Satyakam (1969) by Hrishikesh Mukherjee is considered to be his most successful acting performance .

In the 1970s he embodied pistol heroes with resounding success in action-heavy entertainment films which, in addition to the usual dance and music interludes, were "spiced" with a lot of humor and therefore given the term "Currywestern". Dharmendra played the lead role in Sholay - Bollywood's most successful film of all time - with Amitabh Bachchan , Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini . He made other films with Malini, who became his second wife, including the Soviet-Indian co-production Ali Baba and the 40 thieves from 1980, in which he played Ali Baba . From the 1980s onwards, his films were of weaker quality.

Although Dharmendra did not win a single award for any of his films during his career, he received the 1996 Filmfare Award for Lifetime Achievement. He has acted in more than 200 films.

Dharmendra has successfully established his two sons from their first marriage, Sunny and Bobby Deol , as actors in Bollywood. His daughter Esha from his marriage to Hema Malini has also been a Bollywood actress since 2002. Dharmendra is politically active for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has been a member of parliament since 2004.

In 2012 he was awarded the Indian State Order Padma Bhushan .
