Meena Kumari ( Hindi , मीना कुमारी, Mīnā Kumārī; born August 1, 1932 in Bombay ; † March 31, 1972 there ; real name: Mahjabeen Bux ) was an Indian film actress. She is considered the "Queen of Tragedy" of Bollywood .

She was the daughter of the theater actor Ali Bux and the Bengali dancer Iqbal Begum. She had her first film role as a child under the name Baby Meena in 1939. She first played in mythological films before she got the role of her life and her first Filmfare Award as the romantic-tragic heroine in Baiju Bawra in 1952 . Her film appearances as a suffering woman are less numerous than concise by Indian standards. Kumari consciously cultivated this image. In her greatest acting performance in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam , she played alongside Waheeda Rehman and Guru Dutt, a depressed woman with alcohol problems who, by giving up herself, tries to win back her breakaway husband. In the mid-1960s, Kumari was severely alcoholic himself. Her last film Pakeezah (1971) became a classic after her death.

Meena Kumari is a four-time Filmfare Award winner for Best Actress . She died of cirrhosis of the liver .
