Waheeda Rehman

Waheeda Rehman ( Hindi , वहीदा रहमान, Vahīdā Rahmān; born May 14, 1938 in Delhi ) is an Indian film actress .

She made her film debut in 1955 in a Telugu film by D. Yoganand . The audience was enthusiastic about her dancing performance and later made her the star of Hindi films of the 1950s and 1960s. In Guru Dutt's autobiographical film Pyaasa (1957) she plays a prostitute. She also starred in a few other Guru Dutt films, such as Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959). She often appeared as a positive counterbalance to the dramatic roles of other actors, for example with Meena Kumari in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962). She starred in Abhijan (1962, with Soumitra Chatterjee ), directed by Satyajit Ray . She reached the peak of her career in Guide (1965, with Dev Anand ) by Vijay Anand in the role of a woman who leaves her impotent husband to live with her lover, who helps her with a career as a dancer. Her portrayal is considered outstanding and despite the anti-traditionalist plot she managed to win the audience's sympathy for the film character. Subsequent ambitious roles were less successful, but she had commercial success e.g. B. with Teesri Kasam (1966, with Raj Kapoor ). Waheeda Rehman continued to play character roles; she was Amitabh Bachchan's "film mother" several times in the 1970s and 1980s . Yash Chopra cast them in his film Lamhe (1991) and featured them prominently with a throwback to their dance performance in Guide . After that, Waheeda Rehman initially withdrew from the film business, but has been back in Bollywood since 2005 .

Rehman is twice winner of the Filmfare Awards for Best Actress and won the 1993 Filmfare Award for lifetime achievement.
