Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam ( Hindi : साहिब बीबी और गुलाम , translated: owner, wife and slave ) is a Bollywood film from 1962. The story is based on the book of the same name by Bimal Mitra .
action
Bengal late 19th century: Manjhle Babu and Chhote Sarkar, two brothers of the Choudhury family, inherited the Badi Haveli . Chhote is married to Chhoti Bahu, a beautiful middle-class woman. Yet she does not get the attention of her husband, who, as befits his class, treats her more like a maid. Every evening he has fun with women and alcohol in the brothel , while Chhoti remains lonely.
Then Bhoothnath appears, a middle-aged man who has traveled to Calcutta to look for work. He takes a job in Subinoy Babu's factory and falls in love with his young daughter, Jaba.
One night the servant of Chhote, Bansi, who is also related to Bhoothnath, takes him to Chhoti. Bhoothnath is immediately overwhelmed by her beauty and sadness and gives her the strength not to simply accept her husband's way of life: he helps her to win back her husband. Bhoothnath becomes her secret confidante.
Bhoothnath leaves town to train as an architect. During this time, Chhoti tries to win back her husband. But Chhoti's attempts are unsuccessful, until she reaches for alcohol herself to have Chhote Sarkar with her.
A few years later, Bhoothnath returns and is shocked by what he saw. Chhoti is desperately addicted to alcohol, as is her husband. She asks Bhoothnath to accompany her to a temple to pray for her husband. Their conversation is overheard by her brother-in-law, Manjhle Babu, who is furious. Thus, he orders a henchman to punish Chhoti for associating with strange men outside the Choudhury family.
When Chhoti and Bhoothnath set off with a cart, the cart is stopped. Bhoothnath is punched and passed out while Chhoti Bahu is kidnapped. After Bhoothnath wakes up in a hospital, he learns that Chhoti has disappeared and that her husband has passed away. Bhoothnath's workers inform him that they have found a skeleton in Badi Haveli . From the jewelry on the corpse, Bhoothnath realizes that these are the remains of Chhoti Bahu.
