Nargis ( Hindi , नर्गिस, Nargis, born June 1, 1929 in Allahabad , † May 3, 1981 in Kolkata ) was an Indian film actress .

Life

Nargis was born with the name Fatima A. Rashid. Since 1934 she appeared in films, initially in productions of her parents, from 1943 she played adult roles and was a film star six years later at the age of 20. She had her final breakthrough in 1949 with Andaz von Mehboob Khan at the side of Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor . Nargis often worked with the actor and director Raj Kapoor, the sympathy of the two actors for each other was particularly evident in romantic films. They made more than 15 films together, including the hit films Barsaat (1949), Awaara (1951), Shri 420 (1955) and Chori Chori (1956).

There was also a close working relationship with Mehboob Khan, under whose direction she played for the first time in 1943. He was the director of the film Mother India / Bharat Mata (1957), which is the most outstanding achievement and highlight of Nargis' film career. She plays the life of the principled Indian farmer Radha from her youth through to old age. The film received 5 Filmfare Awards and was the first Indian film to be nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film.

After that, Nargis retired from the film business and worked in the charity sector. She was the first film personality to be awarded the Padma Shri . Since 1959 she was married to the actor Sunil Dutt , her son is the actor Sanjay Dutt . Nargis died of cancer in 1981. After her death, Sunil Dutt founded the cancer aid organization Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation . The Nargis Dutt Award , a national Indian film award, is named after her.
