Mother India ( Hindi मटर इंडिया , maṭar iṇḍiyā ) is an Indian feature film by Mehboob Khan from 1957. It is one of the financially most successful classics of Indian film and was the first film in its country to be nominated for an Oscar .

action

Radha and Shamu get married. In order to properly furnish the new daughter-in-law, the mother-in-law borrows money from Sukhi, the moneylender. And this burden cannot be borne, also and precisely because no one in the village can read except the moneylender, who writes horrific interest in the contract. Are 3/4 of the field pledged or only 1/4? No one can reply to Sukhi's documents. The family groans under the burden, even when 4 children are born. But she doesn't give up and tries to cultivate stony ground herself in order to be able to pay the interest.

There are always conflicts with Sukhi, and it is never clarified whether this loan is a fraud or just usury or both. But no matter how much the nature, the people and Sukhi try to destroy the family, the mother Radha does not give up, raises her children with love and yet cannot prevent the hatred she has never sown from growing. No matter how much nature and people take from Radhu, there is one thing they cannot take away from her: her honor as a woman, as a mother and a person in the community.

Subject

Poverty and pride, honor and injustice are discussed. The focus of the film, however, is above all the strength of the mother as a link between the family and Indian society, in which the woman was sometimes seen as an accessory to the spouse.

background

With this film, director Mehboob Khan created a remake of his own film epic Aurat from 1940. Nargis and her “film son” Sunil Dutt married in 1959, their child is Sanjay Dutt .
