Sunil Dutt ( Hindi : सुनील दत्त , Sunīl Datt ; born June 6, 1929 in Khurd in the Jhelam district , today Pakistan ; † May 25, 2005 in Mumbai ; real name: Balraj Dutt ) was an Indian film actor, social activist and politician.

His father died when he was five years old and he and his siblings grew up with his uncle. During the partition of British India , his family moved to what is now Haryana . Sunil Dutt went to college in Mumbai. While working on the side at an English advertising company, he met influential filmmakers, including Nargis , whom he married in 1958.

In 1955 he made his film debut. He became famous with B. R. Chopras Ek Hi Raasta (1956). The following year he starred alongside Nargis with Mehboob Khan 's greatest work, Mother India , which received five Filmfare Awards and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Dutt played Birju, the rebellious son of Radha (Nargis), whom Radha (Nargis) shot at the end out of principle.

Sunil Dutt was at the height of his career in the 1960s. He appeared in BR Chopras Sadhna (1958) and Humraaz (1967), as well as Yash Chopras Waqt (1965) and formed film pairs with Vyjayantimala , Waheeda Rehman , Nutan ( Sujata (1959)) and Meena Kumari . He has appeared in 100 films.

In 1968 Sunil Dutt was awarded the Padma Shri . It was launched in Bollywood by his son Sanjay in 1981 , the year his wife Nargis died of cancer. He then resigned from film work and devoted himself to helping cancer, for which he founded the Nargis Dutt Foundation. He was also involved in politics on the side of the Indian National Congress . Dutt traveled on a peace mission in crisis regions in South Asia - in India and its neighboring countries - and supported the social work of NGOs . Since 1984 he has regularly won a seat in parliament for his electoral district in northwest Mumbai . In 1993, Sunil Dutt resigned his parliamentary seat in protest against the handling of protesters during riots in Mumbai. In 2004 Sunil Dutt became Minister of Sport and Youth in his country in the Manmohan Singh I cabinet . He died of a heart attack the following year. His daughter Priya took over his political position in the Mumbai electoral district after his death.

Dutt had private problems with his son Sanjay , who was a drug addict in the 1980s and entangled in mafia structures in the 1990s.
