Cabinet Manmohan Singh I
The Manmohan Singh I cabinet was the first of a total of two Indian cabinets under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh . It was sworn in by President APJ Abdul Kalam on May 22, 2004 , after the Congress Party and its allied parties won the 2004 parliamentary elections in India . Surprisingly, the leader of the Congress party Sonia Gandhi had renounced the post of prime minister and proposed the then 71-year-old economist Manmohan Singh. Singh then put together a coalition cabinet in which, in addition to the Congress Party (INC), representatives of the following political parties were represented: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) , Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
The following is a list of the composition of the cabinet when it is first presented. The cabinet, together with the Prime Minister, consisted of 68 people. These included 28 cabinet ministers and 39 ministers of state (10 of them with their own area of responsibility, with independent charge ). The distribution of the 67 ministerial posts between the parties was as follows: 42 INC, 8 RJD, 7 DMK, 3 NCP, 2 PMK, 2 TRS, 1 LJP, 1 JMM, 1 IUML.
