Cabinet Deve Gowda

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Deve Gowda Cabinet was established in India on June 1, 1996 by Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda of Janata Dal (JD). It replaced the Vajpayee I cabinet and remained in office until April 21, 1997, after which it was replaced by the Gujral cabinet .

In the parliamentary elections on April 27, May 2 and 7, 1996 , the Indian National Congress (INC) received the most votes, but lost 7.46 percentage points and only had 140 of the 545 MPs. Due to the right to vote, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had almost 30 million votes less than the INC, became the strongest faction in the Lok Sabha with 161 seats . The Janata Dal (JD) had 46 parliamentarians and remained the third largest force. After the previous Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was the first head of government in India to be convicted of bribery in a criminal case and then overthrown in a vote of no confidence on May 16, 1996, the BJP politician Atal Bihari Vajpayee became a minority government on May 16, 1991 . However, since he could not find a majority for his government, Vajpayee submitted his resignation on June 1, 1996 after just under two weeks in office. Since ultimately no party was able to provide a clear majority, Deve Gowda was a surprising compromise candidate for Prime Minister of a coalition government , the ministers from JD, Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), Samajwadi Party (SP), Communist Party of India (CPI), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and one non-party member.
