HD Deve Gowda ( Haradanahalli Dodde Deve Gowda ; Kannada : ಹೆಚ್.ಡಿ.ದೇವೇಗೌಡ; * May 18, 1933 in Haradanahalli , Karnataka ) was Prime Minister of India from June 1, 1996 to April 21, 1997 .

Deve Gowda comes from the Hassan district in the state of Karnataka. He became a member of the Congress Party in 1953 and remained a member until 1962. He then ran as an independent candidate and was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Karnataka. He was re-elected several times in the following years and from 1977 headed the areas of public relations and land irrigation. He resigned from the cabinet in 1982 after he was denied an increase in funds for irrigation.

In 1991 Deve Gowda was elected to the Lok Sabha . From 1994 he headed the Janata Dal party and in the same year became Chief Minister of Karnataka. When no party was able to form a clear majority in the parliamentary elections in 1996, Deve Gowda was elected Prime Minister by a coalition of several parties as a surprising compromise candidate.

His son, HD Kumaraswamy, is also a politician in Karnataka and has been the state's chief minister for a year and a half .
