biography

DV Sadananda Gowda was born on March 18, 1953 to Venkappa Gowda and Kamala in the village of Mandekolu near Sullia in the Dakshina Kannada district in the coastal region of Karnatakas. He is Hindu and belongs to the Vokkaliga , a caste that is particularly well represented in the south of Karnataka , and which, in addition to the numerically strong Lingayat, plays an important role in the politics of Karnataka, which is characterized by caste loyalty. Sadananda Gowda earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Puttur and then a Bachelor of Laws degree in Udupi . In 1976 he started practicing as a lawyer. DV Sanananda Gowda has been married to his wife Datty Sadananda since 1980. The couple has a son.

DV Sadananda Gowda began his political career in the Hindu nationalist party Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), which was merged into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980 . After holding various party offices at the district level, he took over the leadership of the BJP Yuva Morcha (the party's youth organization) in Karnataka from 1983 to 1989. In 1989 Sadananda Gowda ran for the first time unsuccessfully in the election for the Karnataka Legislative Assembly (the lower house of the state parliament ). In the next election in 1994 he was successful and was able to defend his Puttur constituency in 1999 as well. During his second legislative term, he was deputy opposition leader in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from 1999 to 2004 . In 2004 Sadananda Gowda was elected to the Lok Sabha , the lower house of the all-India parliament, in the Mangalore constituency. In the 2009 election he entered the constituency of Udupi-Chikmagalur and was successful again. After his election as Chief Minister of Karnataka, Sadananda Gowda gave up his Lok Sabha seat. Instead, he was elected to the Legislative Council (the upper house of Karnatakas) in a by-election (the requirement for the office of Chief Minister is a seat in the state parliament).

After the Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa , who had headed the BJP government in Karnataka since 2008, had to resign in 2011 due to a corruption scandal, DV Sadananda Gowda prevailed against his party rival Jagadish Shettar , the Minister for Rural Development in the Yeddyurappa cabinet, and was won by the BJP parliamentary group appointed to succeed the resigned head of government. On August 4, 2011, he was sworn in as Chief Minister Karnatakas. Against the background of the widespread voices that suspect that Yeddyurappa would continue to pull the strings in the background through the election of his confidante and prepare his return to the office of Chief Minister, Sadananda Gowda felt compelled to make it clear that he would not rule as "Yeddyurappa's puppet". When Yeddyurappa was acquitted of the corruption allegations in March 2012 and was preparing to return to power, Sadananda Gowda resisted his ambitions. Yeddyurappa then transferred its support to Jagadish Shettar. This was followed by an internal party crisis in which the Lingayat faction in particular refused to support Sadananda Gowda and sided with Shettar, who also belonged to this caste. On June 29, 2012, nine ministers from Sadanada Gowda's cabinet resigned and openly opposed the head of government. On July 11, 2012, Sadananda Gowda finally had to give up the office of Chief Minister in favor of Jagadish Shettar.

In the Indian parliamentary elections in 2014 , DV Sadananga Gowda was re-elected to the Lok Sabha. He now represents the constituency of Bangalore North . On May 26, 2014, he was appointed Minister of Railways in the newly formed Modi I cabinet. He also received this department in the Modi II cabinet (from May 31, 2019).
