biography

Jagadish Shettar was born on December 17, 1955 in the village of Kerur near Badami in what is now the Bagalkot district in northern Karnataka. He is Hindu and belongs to the Lingayat , a widespread and politically influential caste in Karnataka . His father SS Shettar was a lawyer , politically active in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh , the predecessor party of the BJP, and mayor of the city of Hubli-Dharwad . Jagadish Shettar's uncle Sadashiv Shettar was also active in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and was elected to the parliament of the state of Mysore (now Karnataka) in 1967. Jagadish Shettar earned a bachelor's degree in economics and then a Bachelor of Laws from Hubli. He has 20 years of professional experience as a lawyer. A marriage in 1984 resulted in two sons.

Jagadish Shettar began his political career in the BJP-affiliated student organization Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad . He was also a member of the Hindu nationalist cadre organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In 1994 Jagadish Shettar was first elected to the Legislative Assembly (the lower house of the state parliament) in the state elections in Karnataka for the BJP in the constituency of Hubli Rural . He defended his constituency in the 1999, 2004, 2008 and 2013 elections. From 1999 to 2004 Shettar was an opposition leader in the Legislative Assembly. In 2005 he became chairman of the BJP in Karnataka. When the BJP formed a government alliance with the Janata Dal (Secular) party in 2006 , Jagadish Shettar held the post of finance minister. After the coalition soon broken and the BJP had emerged from the due election with a majority, Jagadish Shettar was in 2008, first for parliament speaker elected and then as Minister of Rural Development and on 17 November 2009 Panchayati Raj in the BJP government BS Yeddyurappas appointed .

After the Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa resigned in 2011 due to a corruption scandal, Jagadish Shettar was one of the candidates for his successor. Ultimately, however, DV Sadananda Gowda, with the support of Yeddyurappa , prevailed in the internal power struggle and was chosen by the BJP parliamentary group as the successor to the resigned Chief Minister. Jagadish Shettar also retained his ministerial office in Sadananda Gowda's government. When BS Yeddyurappa was acquitted of the corruption allegations in March 2012 and was preparing to return to power, Sadananda Gowda opposed his ambitions. Yeddyurappa then transferred its support to Jagadish Shettar. An internal party crisis followed, in which the Lingayat faction in particular sided with Shettar and finally forced Sadananda Gowda to resign. On July 12, 2012, Jagadish Shettar was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Karnatakas. His term of office lasted only ten months, however, as the BJP lost the following parliamentary election to the Congress Party . In response to the election defeat, Jagadish Shettar submitted his resignation on May 8, 2013.
