Joost J. Oppenheim

Joost Joe Oppenheim (born August 11, 1934 in Venlo ) is an American immunologist . He is considered one of the leading experts on cytokines .

Oppenheim studied medicine at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in New York City with a bachelor's degree in 1958 and an M.-D. degree in 1960. He then completed his clinical and specialist training at the King County Hospital in Seattle (internship 1960/61 ) and University of Washington Hospital (Assistant Medical Resident, 1961–62) and went to the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland in 1962 . After a short post-doc stay at the University of Birmingham , he worked in the Biochemistry Laboratory of the National Institute of Dental Research of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1966 to 1969 and from 1970 head of the Cellular Immunology Department of the NIH. From 1983 he was director of the laboratory for cellular immune regulation at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the NIH in Frederick, Maryland.

In 1987 he received the Avery Landsteiner Prize and the Marie T. Bonazinga Research Award and in 1982 the Ferdin and Von Hebra Prize.

From 1994 he was editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology . He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association of Immunologists .
