Chaudhary Charan Singh ( Hindi चौधरी चरण सिंह Caudharī Caraṇ Siṅh ; born December 23, 1902 in Noorpur , Uttar Pradesh ; † May 29, 1987 in New Delhi ) was an Indian politician and Prime Minister from July 28, 1979 to January 14, 1980 India .

Life

Charan Singh came from a north Indian farming family from the Jat ethnic group . In 1929 he joined the Indian National Congress and was imprisoned several times during the Indian struggle for independence in the following years. In the years to come, his policy was aimed at giving India's rural population more political influence. He came into conflict with Jawaharlal Nehru , whose socialist policy of agricultural collectivization he rejected. In 1967 he left the Congress Party and founded his own party, Bharatiya Kranti Dal (BKD, "Indian Revolutionary Party").

1967 to 1968 and again from 1970 he was Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh . At the end of 1974 he merged the BKD with other parties to form Bharatiya Lok Dal in order to be able to better oppose Indira Gandhi's government with united forces . He was imprisoned during the period of the state of emergency from 1975 to 1977 . In 1977 the Bharatiya Lok Dal merged with other parties to form the Janata Party . After this had won the 1977 elections , Singh was first interior minister in the newly formed government , then deputy prime minister and in 1979 finally acting prime minister with brief support from the Congress Party and Indira Gandhis. But already after seven months this withdrew his support and he gave up his office.

Charan Singh's son Ajit Singh founded the Bharatiya Kisan Kamghar Party (BKKP) in 1996 , which merged in 1998 to form Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). The RLD sees itself in a certain way as the successor to the BLD and has its focus in western Uttar Pradesh. However, it has not come close to attaining the importance that the BLD once had.
