Gulzarilal Nanda

Gulzarilal Nanda ( Hindi : गुलज़ारीलाल नन्दा, Gulzārīlāl Nandā ; born July 4, 1898 in Sialkot , Punjab ; † January 15, 1998 in New Delhi ) was an Indian politician and interim prime minister .

After training in Lahore , Agra and Allahabad , he became a staff member at the University of Allahabad in 1920 and, from 1921, professor of economics at the National College in Bombay . From 1922 to 1946 he worked for the Ahmedabad Textile Workers Union . Because of this activity and in connection with the politics of Satyagraha of Mahatma Gandhi , Nanda was imprisoned in 1932 and 1942 to 1944.

In 1937 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Bombay and until 1939 also held the office of Minister for Labor and Excise Taxes. In 1950 he became vice-chairman of the national development commission and in September 1951 development minister in the Indian government and was entrusted with the overall supervision of the policy on land irrigation and energy supply. In 1957, Nanda was elected to the Lok Sabha and appointed Federal Minister for Labor, Employment and Development. 1963 to 1966 he took over the office of Minister of the Interior.

After the death of Jawaharlal Nehru , Nanda was sworn in as temporary Prime Minister of India on May 27, 1964. Lal Bahadur Shastri assumed this office on June 9th . After Shastri's sudden death on January 11, 1966, Nanda took over the office again temporarily until January 24, until he was replaced by Indira Gandhi .

He was a follower of the principles of Gandhi and received the order of Bharat Ratna in 1997 .
