Cabinet of Indira Gandhi II

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Indira Gandhi II cabinet was formed in India on March 18, 1971 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of the Indian National Congress (INC). It replaced the Indira Gandhi I cabinet and remained in office until March 24, 1977, after which it was replaced by the Desai cabinet .

The INC was confirmed in the election of March 13, 1971 and received 350 of the 520 seats in the Lok Sabha .

On June 25, 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi proclaimed a state of emergency . The state of emergency existed for 21 months until March 21, 1977. During this time, basic rights such as freedom of the press were abolished or restricted, numerous opposition members were imprisoned and the prime minister largely ruled by decree.

In the parliamentary election that followed , the INC suffered a heavy defeat and only got 153 of the 540 seats in the Lok Sabha. The winner of the election was the Janata Party (JNP), which then formed a government under the former INC politician Morarji Desai .
