Cabinet Gujral

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gujral Cabinet was established in India on April 21, 1997 by Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral of Janata Dal (JD). It replaced the Gowda cabinet and remained in office until March 19, 1998, after which it was replaced by the Vajpayee II cabinet .

After the Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda lost a vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha on April 14, 1997 and resigned, the former Foreign Minister Inder Kumar Gujral took over the post of Prime Minister. He continued the coalition government of his predecessor, the ministers from JD, Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), Samajwadi Party (SP), Communist Party of India (CPI), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and a non-party member. After accusations against coalition partner DMK in connection with the investigation into the murder of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi , tensions arose within the government. Gujral then submitted his resignation on November 28th. On December 4, 1997, President K. R. Narayanan announced the dissolution of Lok Sabha and the holding of new elections in February next year. At Narayanan's request, Gujral and his cabinet remained in office until the new election of Lok Sabha.

From the parliamentary elections on February 16, 22, 23 and 28, and on March 7, 1998 , there was a neck and neck race between the Indian National Congress (INC), which received 25.82 percent, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which came to 25.59 percent. Due to the electoral law, however, the BJP became the strongest force and got 182 of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha, while the INC had 141 seats. The main loser of the election was Janata Dal (JD) of the previous Prime Minister Gujral, who lost 40 seats and only had six members. After the election, Atal Bihari Vajpayee of the BJP formed his second cabinet.
