P. Chidambaram ( Palaniappan Chidambaram , Tamil : ப. சிதம்பரம்; born September 16, 1945 in Kandanur , Tamil Nadu ) is an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress . In the first Indian Union Cabinet under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh , he was Minister of Finance from May 2004 to November 2008 and Minister of the Interior after the resignation of Shivraj Patil . He was then Minister of the Interior in the second Manmohan Singh cabinet from 2009 to 2012 and finance minister again from 2012 to 2014.

P. Chidambaram was already Finance Minister in the United Front government under Prime Minister Vajpayee from 1996 to 1998 and before that Minister of State in the Rajiv Gandhi / Narasimha Rao governments in various ministries.

biography

P. Chidambaram was the son of L. Palaniappa Chettiar and Lakshmi Achi and was born into a Hindu family from the Chettiar caste in Kandanur in the Sivaganga district of today's Tamil Nadu state . The Chettiar have become very influential as businessmen in the southern Indian state. After attending school at Madras Christian College Mr. Second School in Chennai , he received his B.Sc. in Statistics from Presidency College, Bachelor of Law (BL) from Madras Law College and Master in Business Administration ( MBA ) from Harvard Business School at Harvard University . From 1969 he worked as a lawyer at the Madras High Court and later at the Supreme Court in Chennai and at various higher courts, including in New Delhi . He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1984 (re-elections in 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998 and 2004).

He is married to Nalini Chidambaram, a lawyer, and they are the parents of their only son, Karti P. Chidambaram.
