Chandra Shekhar Cabinet
The Chandra Shekhar cabinet was established in India on November 10, 1990 by Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar of the Samajwadi Janata Party (SJD). It replaced the VP Singh cabinet and remained in office until June 21, 1991, after which it was replaced by the Rao cabinet .
After the split of Janata Dal (JD), the party of the previous Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh , and its overthrow by a vote of no confidence in parliament, Chandra Shekhar took over the office of Prime Minister. He had previously founded the SJD, which emerged from members of the JD, which, however, only had a few seats in the Lok Sabha . However, his minority government was tolerated by the Indian National Congress (INC) of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi , the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the two communist parties Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M)) and Communist Party of India (CPI) . After this support was terminated, early elections were announced on April 12, 1991. In these parliamentary elections May 20, June 12 and June 15, 1991 , which were overshadowed by the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991, the INC won 232 of the 523 seats in the Lok Sabha, while BJP received 120 and JD 59 seats. PV Narasimha Rao of the INC then formed a new government on June 21, 1991.
