Vidya Charan Shukla

Vidya Charan Shukla (born August 2, 1929 in Raipur , Central Provinces ; † June 11, 2013 in Gurgaon , Haryana ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC) who, among other things, was a member of the House of Commons ( Lok Sabha ) for several years and for a short time Foreign Minister was.

Life

Shukla was a son of the lawyer and freedom fighter Ravi Shankar Shukla , who was Chief Minister of the Central Provinces and Berar and Madhya Pradesh between 1947 and 1956 . His older brother Shyama Charan Shukla was also Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh from 1972 to 1972, 1975 to 1977 and 1989 to 1990 .

After attending school, he studied agricultural sciences at Morris College and at the University College of Law in Nagpur , graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then worked as an agricultural scientist.

Shukla began his political career when he was first elected as a member of the Lower House ( Lok Sabha ) as a candidate for the Indian National Congress in 1957 . After eight re-elections, he represented the interests of the constituency of Mahasamund and, most recently, of Raipur until 1996 .

During the government of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during The Emergency ( The Emergency ) from 1975 to 1977, Shukla was Minister of State in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting .

In the mid-1980s he joined Vishwanath Pratap Singh , who criticized the leadership style of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi , and with this one of the co-founders of the Popular Front ( Jan Morcha ) in 1987 . After their merger with parts of the Janata Party , the Bharatiya Lok Dal and the Indian National Congress (Socialist) to the Janata Dal on October 11, 1988, he joined the latter, and was re-elected in the 1989 elections as their candidate for deputy in the Lok Sabha .

After Vishwanath Pratap Singh succeeded Rajiv Gandhi as Prime Minister on December 2, 1989, Shukla was appointed as Minister of State in his government. Subsequently, he was appointed Foreign Minister on November 21, 1990 by his successor as Prime Minister, Chandra Shekhar , and thus the successor to Indian Kumar Gujral . Shukla held the office of foreign minister for almost three months until February 20, 1991. After that he was again a member of the Indian National Congress.

On May 25, 2013, Shukla was seriously injured by a Naxalite attack during an election rally and died after almost three weeks of treatment in a hospital in Gurgaon.
