Gurgaon ( Hindi गुड़गांव Guṛgāṃv [ ɡʊɽˈɡɑ̃ːo ]), since 2016 Gurugram , is a city ( municipal corporation ) in the Indian state of Haryana with around 877,000 inhabitants (2011 census). It is a satellite city of the metropolis of Delhi and belongs to the National Capital Region .

location

Gurgaon is located a good 30 kilometers southwest of the city center of Delhi and has been connected to the capital via the Delhi Metro since 2010 and is not far from the country's busiest airport, IGI ( Indira Gandhi International Airport ). Gurgaon is the seat of the district of the same name .

climate

The climate crisis has led to a drastic shortage of drinking water in large parts of India . This is particularly noticeable in Gurugram. The city is one of those 21 major Indian cities whose groundwater reserves will be completely depleted in 2020 according to calculations by the government agency NITI Aayog.

Younger development

Gurgaon has been gaining prominence in recent times. Many wealthy Indians moved there because of its proximity to the big city of Delhi and a relatively well-kept, safe and sometimes green environment. Due to the growth, only a small public park and the green areas of the residential complexes remained. The former parks have been replaced by modern high-rise buildings, which are inhabited by the rich part of the population. The large proportion of wealthy people also meant that over 20 large American-style malls were built in Gurgaon . In addition, several private schools have settled here. Gurgaon is a location of the software company SAP .

In 2010 the Commonwealth Games took place in Delhi . For this, money was invested in Gurgaon's infrastructure, among other things. A new elevated railway has been completed connecting Gurgaon with all of Delhi, and Gurgaon's roads have been expanded.

On April 12, 2016, the government of Haryana state decided to officially rename the city of Gurgaon to Gurugram. Gurugram (roughly translated as " Guru's Village ") refers to Guru Dronacharya, a spiritual figure from the Mahabharata .
