From 1949 the city was built by thousands of refugees (as a result of the division of the subcontinent in 1947) under the land-use planning of the architect Otto Königsberger , who emigrated from Germany , in collaboration with the architect Parmeshwari Lal Verma as a self-help city . The new residents were able to create their own residential quarters cheaply and quickly. In addition to Faridabad, Gandhidham was also developed as a new city by Königsberger as a self-help city and self-build city .
