Gandhidham ( Gujarati : ગાંધીધામ) is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat . The city is located in the Kachchh District on the north bank of the Gulf of Kachchh . The city has the status of a municipality ( Nagar Palika ). It is divided into 14 wards . At the 2011 census, Gandhidham had just under 250,000 inhabitants.

Gandhidham originated in the early 1950s when refugees were settled from the Sindh region (now in Pakistan ). It was built by thousands of refugees as a self-help city under the land-use planning of the architect Otto Königsberger , who emigrated from Germany . The new residents were able to create their own residential quarters cheaply and quickly. In addition to Gandhidham, Faridabad south of Delhi was also developed by Königsberger as a self-help & self-build city .
