Ambala ( Hindi : अंबाला , Ambālā ) is an Indian city.

geography

The city is located in the northwest Indian state of Haryana on the border with the state of Punjab , about 150 km north of the federal capital New Delhi . It is the administrative seat of the district of Ambala .

Ambala and the neighboring garrison town of Ambala Cantonment form twin cities . The two former Municipal Councils Ambala (City) and Ambala Sadar were combined as zones to form the newly founded Municipal Corporation Ambala . The population of the two cities in the 2011 census was 196,000 and 105,000 respectively.

traffic

The city is well connected to road and rail transport. The Grand Trunk Road , also called National Highway 1 here, runs through Ambala Cantonment and Ambala.

On January 1, 1958, a serious railway accident occurred about 10 km outside of Ambala in Mohri station : A passenger train from Ambala to Delhi drove onto an express train from Delhi to Pathankot that stopped there. 32 people died, 85 were also injured.

economy

The largest employer is the manufacturer of optical instruments, NK Jain Instruments Pvt. Ltd., the national market leader for microscopes.

In Ambala Cantonment there are large bases of the Indian Army and Air Force .

Attractions

In the surroundings of Ambala the planned city Chandigarh (called "The beautiful city") and Kurukshetra , where according to the Bhagavad Gita the battle for Mahabharata was fought , are among the sights.

The climate in Ambala is subtropical . In the summer months of July and August, during the monsoon season , most precipitation falls. The average annual precipitation is 919 mm. The annual mean temperature is 24.5 ° C.
