mythology

Death of Bhismas on the battlefield, Kurukshetra, Haryana, India

According to the tradition of the Mahabharata , the great battle of Kurukshetra , which formed the background for the Bhagavadgita , took place in the "field of Kuru" .

In this 18-day battle, the Kauravas , descendants of the Kuru dynasty, fought against the Pandavas , who also belonged to the Kurus. The Pandavas had previously been cheated out of their kingdom by the Kauravas and demanded their share back after a 13-year exile. In the ensuing battle, the close blood relatives from three generations fought against each other as well as the greatest warriors of their time as allies. In this difficult situation - before the fight begins - the divine Krishna as the charioteer of Arjuna , the great hero of the Pandavas, explains why he has to fight. These philosophical explanations summarize the knowledge of the various spiritual and religious currents of the past. This "song of the sublime", the Bhagavadgita, is still one of the most widely read holy books in India.

It is said again and again that the battle took place around 3000 BC. Took place. The star constellations mentioned in the Mahabharata allow such an interpretation, but the weapons and chariots described speak for a much later time (1st millennium BC). Despite all the uncertainties, many Hindus see this battle as a historical event, but also as an allegory . Like Aurobindo in his essays on the Gita , they interpret the armed conflicts in Kurukshetra as a symbol of the 'battlefield' of yoga and the conflict between the forces of the divine order and those of the ego.

Attractions

In a Sri Krishna museum, works by hundreds of artists from all over India are exhibited, who have portrayed Krishna in wood, stone, bronze, ivory and other materials in a modern or traditional way. The battle from the Mahabharata is modeled in a Kurukshetra Panorama & Science Center . In the vicinity of Kurukshetra in Jyotisar is a temple with a banyan tree , which is said to be the sprout of the tree under which Krishna Arjuna revealed the Bhagavadgita.
