Thanesar (also Kurukshetra ) is a city ( Municipal Council ) in the northwest Indian state of Haryana . The east bordering Kurukshetra belongs to the Municipal Council , which extends over an area of ​​32.25 km².

Thanesar is located in the Ganges plain at an altitude of 254  m 155 km north of the federal capital New Delhi . Thanesar is the administrative seat of the Kurukshetra district . The city had 155,152 inhabitants at the 2011 census. 92% of the population are Hindus .

The national highway NH 1 connects Thanesar with the Shahbad located 20 km to the north and the Ambala located 45 km north-northwest and with the Karnal located 35 km south-southeast . Thanesar is also connected to these cities by rail.
