Sonipat (also Sonepat ) is a city (since July 6, 2015 a municipal corporation ) in the northwestern Indian state of Haryana .
The city is located in the Eastern Haryana Plain at an altitude of 221 m 45 km north-northwest of the federal capital New Delhi . Sonipat is 15 km west of the Yamuna . The city borders in the south on the Union Territory of Delhi . The city is the administrative seat of the district of the same name .
The then Municipal Council Sonipat had 278,149 inhabitants at the 2011 census. By incorporating neighboring towns and villages into the Municipal Corporation , the corresponding population was 401,366.
The national highways NH 1 and NH 334B cross at Sonipat. Sonipat is connected to the railway network of India.
