The Faridabad district ( Hindi :; फरीदाबाद जिला Punjabi : ਫਰੀਦਾਬਾਦ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ; Urdu : فرید آباد ضلع) is located in the northern Indian state of Haryana .

The district is located in the southeast of Haryana, immediately south of the federal capital New Delhi . The district lies in the north Indian plain. The Yamuna forms the eastern district boundary. Its area is 742.9 km². The administrative seat is the eponymous city of Faridabad .

Faridabad District was formed on August 15, 1979 from parts of Gurgaon District .

In the 2011 census, the population was 1,809,733. 10 years earlier it was 1,365,465. That is an increase of 32.5%. Almost 80% of the district is urbanized . The gender ratio was 873 women per 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 81.70% (88.61% for men and 73.84% for women). 87.77% of the population were followers of Hinduism , 8.93% were Muslims , and 1.91% were Sikhs .
