The area is 898 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Panchkula .
history
The district was established on 1995 and grew out of parts of Ambala .

The population was 561,293 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 19.83%. Panchkula has a gender ratio of 873 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is common for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 81.88%, an increase of almost 8 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the national average. Almost 87.4% of the population are Hindus , approx. 7.3% are Sikhs , approx. 4.2% are Muslims , approx. 0.5% are Christians , approx. 0.3% are Jainas , approx. 0, 2% are Buddhists and approx. 0.1% stated no religious affiliation or belonged to other religions. Children under 6 years of age are 11.8% of the population. The Haryanvi language, a dialect of Hindi, is common in the district .
Almost 55.8% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Panchkula with 211,355 inhabitants.
