The Styrian Reading Center , Institute for Library Organization, Library Development and Reading Education, is the service and coordination point for libraries in Styria , based in Graz .

It was founded in 2005 by the Styrian regional government , the diocese of Graz-Seckau and the (then) regional school board for Styria as a non-profit association . In Styria, it is also responsible for the agendas of the Austrian library work for the Graz-Seckau diocese.

The Styrian Reading Center is responsible for

  • almost 200 Styrian public libraries with around 1,200 librarians (90% voluntary),
  • 400 school libraries and
  • around 40 libraries in special forms (e.g. in associations, prisons, hospitals ...).

(Academic libraries at universities and technical colleges do not belong to the target group.)

The Styrian Reading Center supports the establishment of libraries, advises on building up the book and media inventory, initiates and accompanies events that encourage reading (e.g. parents' evenings and workshops on reading and storytelling and promoting reading), and provides training and further education for volunteers working librarians and contributes to the planning and development of an efficient library network in Styria.

For some years now it has been carrying out reading-educational and reading-promoting projects for children and their families on behalf of the Styrian state government . B. the project Book Start Styria for children from 6 to 18 months, the organization of the Styrian reading day, etc.

The Reading Network Day, organized by the Styrian Reading Center together with the Styrian University of Education , the Styrian Book Club and the Styrian Education Directorate, is the largest annual library event in Austria in terms of the number of participants.

Since 2012, the Styrian State's Children's and Young People's Literature Prize has been awarded at the autumn conference of the Styrian Reading Center in November every even year.

The reading center is financially supported primarily by the State of Styria, Department of Education and Society; other noteworthy financial resources come from the education sector of the Graz-Seckau diocese and from the Austrian Library Association .
