Raipur ( Hindi : रायपुर , Rāypur ) is the capital of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh in the northeastern Deccan .

It has about a million inhabitants. The economy is determined by the wood and food industries. The river Kharun flows west of Raipur. The city is said to have been founded by a Kalachuri king of Ratanpur, Ram Chandra or his son Brahma Deo in the last quarter of the 14th century.

Demographics

The city's population is 1,010,433 according to the 2011 census. Raipur has a gender ratio of 948 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 85.95% in 2011. Almost 87.6% of the population are Hindus , around 7.1% are Muslims , around 1.5% are Christians , around 1.4% each are Sikhs and Jainas , approx. 0.7% are Buddhists and approx. 0.2% belong to another or no religion. Children under 6 years of age are 12.7% of the population. 39.58% live in slums or slums.
