Raipur is a district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .

The area is 12,383 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Raipur .

history

The district was part of Madhya Pradesh until 2000 when the new state of Chhattisgarh was established. The seat of government of Chhattisgarh is in the district of Raipur.

population

The population was 4,063,872 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 34.70% and was therefore very high. Raipur has a gender ratio of 984 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 75.56%, an increase of almost 7 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus slightly above the national average. Almost 95.5% of the population are Hindus , approx. 2.5% are Muslims , approx. 0.6% are Christians , approx. 0.1% are Sikhs , and approx. 1.5% did not declare their religion or practice other religions. 14.4% of the population are children under 6 years of age. The Chhattisgarhi language is spoken in the region .

Almost 36.5% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Raipur with 1,010,433 inhabitants.
