Rajnandgaon is a district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .

The area is 8070 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Rajnandgaon .

history

The district was created in 1973 from parts of Durg. The district was part of Madhya Pradesh until 2000 when the new state of Chhattisgarh was established.

population

The population was 1,537,133 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 19.79% and was therefore very high. Raipur has a gender ratio of 1015 women per 1000 men and thus a rare surplus of women for India. The district had a literacy rate of 75.96% in 2011 . Literacy is thus slightly above the national average. Almost 91.1% of the population are Hindus , approx. 1.5% are Muslims , approx. 1.9% are Buddhists , approx. 0.5% are Jainas , approx. 0.3% are Christians , approx. 2% are Sikhs and approx. 4.5% did not declare any religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 13.6% of the population are children under 6 years of age. The Chhattisgarhi language is spoken in the region .

Almost 17.7% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Rajnandgaon with 163,114 inhabitants.
