Raigarh is a district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .
The area is 8070 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Raigarh .
history
The district was part of Madhya Pradesh until 2000 when the new state of Chhattisgarh was established.
population
The population was 1,493,984 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 18.05% and was therefore very high. Raigarh has a gender ratio of 991 women per 1000 men, a male surplus that is common for India. The district had a literacy rate of 73.26% in 2011 . Literacy is thus similar to the national average. Almost 95.3% of the population are Hindus , approx. 3.2% are Christians , approx. 1.2% are Muslims , approx. 0.1% are Sikhs and approx. 0.4% did not declare any religious affiliation or practiced another Religions. 13.1% of the population are children under 6 years of age. The Chhattisgarhi language is spoken in the region ; Oriya and Hindi are also spoken.
Almost 16.5% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Raigarh with 137,126 inhabitants.
