Jashpur is a district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .

The area is 5838 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name, Jashpur .

history

During the British rule Jashpur was the capital of the princely state of Jashpur , which in turn was part of the Eastern States Agency . Vijay Bhushan Singh Ju Deo was the last king before Indian independence in 1947 when Jashpur became part of India. The district later became part of the Naxalite - communist influenced " Red Corridor ".

The current district was part of Madhya Pradesh until 2000 , when the new state of Chhattisgarh was founded.

population

The population was 851,669 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 14.60%. Jashpur has a gender ratio of 1005 women per 1000 men and thus a rare excess of women for India. The district had a literacy rate of 67.92% in 2011 . Literacy is thus below the national average. Almost 73.9% of the population are Hindus , approx. 22.3% are Christians , approx. 1.8% are Muslims , approx. 0.1% each are Buddhists , Jainas and Sikhs and approx. 1.8% gave none Religion or practiced other religions. 14.4% of the population are children under 6 years of age. The district has a large population of Adivasi and Scheduled Tribes .

The district is very rural and only 8.9% of the population live in cities.
