The Mahasamund district is located in the central east of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .

The district was founded in July 1998 as a split from the Raipur district . It extends over an area of ​​4790 km².

location

In the west, the district is bounded by the Mahanadi river . There is the eponymous district capital Mahasamund . The northern district boundary runs along the foot of the Barnawapara Forest Range , a wooded ridge. To the east of the district is the city of Saraipali , which is connected to Mahasamund by the NH 6 national highway . The River Jonk flows a bit along the southern district boundary before flowing through the district in a northerly direction. In the east the district borders on the state of Odisha .

The Mahasamund district had 860,257 inhabitants in 2001. In the 2011 census it was 1,032,754. 49.57% of these were men ( gender distribution : 1,000 men to 1,017 women). The literacy rate was 71.02% (72.05% among men, 60.25% among women). 13% of the population is in the age group 0–6. 97% of the population were Hindus .
