Course of the Mahanadi |
The Mahanadi ( Hindi : महानदी Mahānadī , lit. "Great River") is an approx. 885 km long river in East India . The Mahanadi drains almost the entire state of Chhattisgarh , large parts of Odisha and smaller areas in the states of Maharashtra and Jharkhand .
course
The Mahanadi rises near the city of Nagari in the highlands of Raipur in the southeast of the state of Chhattisgarh. From there it flows in a northeasterly direction, then turns south of Raigarh to the east and finally flows east of the city of Cuttack in the state of Odisha into the Gulf of Bengal .
Tributaries
The most important tributaries are the Shivnath from the Maikala Mountains (the eastern part of the Satpura Mountains ), the Jonk and Ong from the border area between Chhattisgarh and Odisha, the Hasdeo and the Mand from northern Chhattisgarh, the Ib and the Tel from central Odisha . Downstream from Cuttack, the Mahanadi forms a huge river delta with the Baitarani and Brahmani rivers .
dam
To the northwest of the city of Sambalpur , on the border of Odisha and Chhattisgarh, the Hirakud Dam was built in the 1950s . The dam, officially opened in 1957, dams India's largest artificial lake (746 km²).
vegetation
At the middle reaches of the Mahanadi, in the plain around Raipur , the water-rich region is used to grow rice , which is why this area is known as the "rice bowl". Rice is also predominantly grown in Odisha. In the delta, mangrove forests mix with increasing salt content .
Attractions
The present-day village of Sirpur was the capital of the southern kingdom of Kosala in the Middle Ages ; the ruins of several temples and monasteries are significant. At the village of Huma there is a small temple complex with a leaning Shikhara tower directly on the river. The town of Cuttack , located on a river island and now largely modern in appearance, has a long history; The oldest building is the Barabati Fort , which was originally built in the 14th century, but has been added and changed again and again .
