The Baitarani is one of the six major rivers in the east Indian state of Odisha .
The Baitarani rises in the Guptaganga Hills in the Kendujhar district in Odisha, about 2 km from the village of Gonasika at an altitude of 900 m . It initially flows about 80 km in a northerly direction through the mountains, where it flows 3 km east of the town of Joda . Then he makes a right arc. It forms the border to the northern state of Jharkhand over a distance of about 10 km . The Baitarani turns to the east and shortly thereafter to the south-southeast. He passes the cities of Champua and Anandapur . The river reaches the coastal plain and turns east. The Brahmani and Mahanadi run further south. An arm of the river ( Budha Nadi ) branches off to the south and unites with an arm of the Brahmani. The Baitarani flows through the district capital Jajpur . Later it takes up the left tributary Salandi . Below the village of Chandbali , the Baitarani meets the northern arm of the Brahmani a few kilometers from the sea.
The Baitarani is 360 km long. It drains an area of 14,218 km², of which 13,482 km² are in Odisha and 736 km² in Jharkhand. Important tributaries besides the Salandi are: Kangira, Aradei, Khairi, Bhandan, Deo, Kanjhari, Sita, Musal and Kusei.
