Sambalpur ( Oriya ସମ୍ବଲପୁର ) is a city in the Indian state of Odisha . It is the administrative seat of the Sambalpur District . More than 180,000 people live in Sambalpur (2011 census).
history
In the middle of the 13th century, Balarama Deva , the younger brother of Narasingha Deva , created his own kingdom of Sambalpur and thus established the Chauhan rule in the area. His son Balabhadra Deva conquered the area around Sonapur . Balabhadra Deva's successor Madhukara Deva converted the area around Sonapur into a vassal state and gave it to his second son Madan Gopal , who ruled it as a princely state from 1640 . In April 1800 the princely state of Sambalpur was conquered by the Marathas Empire. Four years later, on January 2nd, 1804, the British conquered Sambalpur, who ruled until India became independent.

Sambalpur is on the east bank of the Mahanadi River . The city is on the national highway NH 6 and is the starting point of the NH 42 to Cuttack . Furthermore, a trunk road leads from Rourkela to Sonapur through Sambalpur. There are rail connections to Bhubaneswar and Titlagarh and via Jharsuguda in the north to Bilaspur and Rourkela.
