history

Rourkela was created around the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). The steelworks is one of the largest German development aid projects. Planning began in 1954. In 1956, construction work began. The project was set up with German development aid by the companies (including AEG , Brown, Boveri & Cie. , Krupp , Demag , Schloemann-Siemag , Siemens AG ), which gained extensive experience in mechanical engineering export. An expansion of the production capacity to 1.8 million tons of crude steel per year in the 1960s and a modernization of the technically obsolete plant in the 1990s were also financed with German development aid. In the third phase, facilities to reduce the previously high environmental impact were retrofitted. Today the steel mill is an important part of the Indian economy and employs around 35,000 people. It is operated by the State Steel Authority of India .

The Rourkela steelworks was planned in the middle of the jungle, in a convenient location not far from the Indian iron ore mining sites. The original city was also planned on the drawing board, but since then it has grown considerably due to immigration from all parts of India.

Around 16,000 residents from 32 villages were relocated for the construction of the steel mill. These " Adivasi " (tribals) are members of indigenous peoples. To compensate for the resettlement of their land, money, land and jobs in the steel mill had been set by law. However, a large part of these commitments has not been kept, as the promoting Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau also found.
