Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is the largest steel producer in India . SAIL is a state owned company of the Indian government. The company was founded on December 2nd, 1972. The company emerged from Hindustan Steel Limited (HSL), with which the Indian steel industry was founded on January 14, 1954 after it became independent in 1947. SAIL still employs around 115,000 people (as of 2010) and produced 12.6 million tons of salable steel in 2006/07. Lt. According to the annual report of September 2010, production increases as the number of employees falls. The turnover in 2009 was 439,350 million Indian rupees, which corresponds to around 10 billion euros at the end of 2010.

Large investments are also planned for the future (after 2010) in order to be able to continue to meet the growing demand of the Indian economy from within its own country. Investments of 487,100 million Indian rupees (approx. 8 billion euros) have already been ordered

SAIL's steel mills are located in Bhilai , Bokaro , Burnpur (near Asansol ), Chandrapur , Durgapur , Rourkela and Salem .

At the Bhilai site in the state of Chhattisgarh, a new steelworks will be built by 2011, for which Siemens is supplying three converters for the production of four million tons of crude steel per year, the associated electrical and automation technology and systems for primary and secondary dedusting and for recovering the converter gases. In 2012, a joint venture was established with Kobe Steel to build and operate a steel mill in India.
