Asansol ( Bengali : আসানসোল , Āsānasol ) is an industrial city in the Bardhaman district in the west of the Indian state of West Bengal . It has about 560,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Asansol is located on the Delhi - Haora railway line and on the Grand Trunk Road . The city's economy is shaped by the coal deposits of the surrounding area, there is an iron and steel industry (wagon construction), but also a textile industry. The next significant towns are Durgapur and Shantiniketan .

Asansol is the seat of the Asansol diocese .
