Chandannagar ( Bengali : চন্দননগর , Candannagar ; formerly French Chandernagor ) is a city in the Hugli district in the Indian state of West Bengal . The city is located around 40 kilometers north of Kolkata ( Calcutta ) and has a population of around 167,000 (2011 census). Chandannagar is part of the Kolkata metropolitan area .

history

Chandannagar was founded in 1673 and, with interruptions due to British occupation, was a French colony until the mid-20th century . In 1949 there was a referendum on whether or not French India would remain a free city in the French Union or would join India , with only Chandannagar opting for the Anschluss. On October 2, 1954, it was incorporated into West Bengal by the Chandernagore Merger Act. The remaining cities followed in 1956 (under constitutional law 1962) and today form the Union territory of Puducherry .
