The metropolitan area of ​​Calcutta ( English : Kolkata Metropolitan Area ), also known as Greater Kolkata , is the metropolitan area of the city of Calcutta in the Indian state of West Bengal . It is the third largest metropolitan area in India after Delhi and Mumbai . The area is administered by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority . The area includes 72 cities and 527 small towns and villages. In addition to the core city of Calcutta with over 4 million inhabitants, Haora is another metropolis that belongs to the region. According to the 2011 census data, the total population of the Greater Calcutta area was 14,035,959 people. According to the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, the total area is 1,886.67 km², which corresponds to a population density of 7,440 per km². The metropolitan region has almost twice as high a population density as Berlin . The metropolitan region is connected by its own railway network ( Kolkata Suburban Railway ) and partly by the Kolkata Metro .

Demographics

The Calcutta metropolitan area has a gender ratio of 935 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 87.5% in 2011.
