Hugli ( Bengali : হুগলী , Huglī ) is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal with an area of 3149 km² and a population of 5.5 million inhabitants (as of 2011). It borders the districts of Pashchim Medinipur , Bankura , Bardhaman , Nadia , Uttar 24 Pargana and Haora . The administrative seat of the district is in Chunchura .

Hugli consists of the four subdivisions Chunchura Sadar, Chandannagar, Shrirampur and Arambag. The Hugli River flows on the eastern border of the district and the Damodar River flows through the district from north to south.

The area of the Hugli district was visited as early as the first half of the 16th century by Europeans (Portuguese) who founded a trading post in Hugli and in 1599 built a convent and the first Christian church in Bengal in Bandel . The Portuguese were later followed by the Danes, Dutch, British, French, Belgians and Germans. The Dutch settled in Chunchura, the French stayed in Chandannagar from 1816 to 1950 . In 1854 the Serampore Town train station was built.

The Hugli district was established in 1795. In 1843 the southern part became an independent district as Haora. Another area of Hugli was added to the Medinipur district in 1872 .

The economy of the district is predominantly agricultural, mainly jute and vegetables are grown. Jute mills are located along the Hugli River in Tribeni , Bhadreswar , Champdani and Shrirampur . The company Hindustan Motors has one of its largest production sites in Uttarpara in the south of the district Hooghly. The plant was closed in 2014.

Efforts by the West Bengal government to locate another automobile manufacturer here with Tata Motors and to promote industrialization led to communal riots near Singur, instigated by the political opposition .
