The Hugli ( Bengali : হুগলী , Huglī; also anglicized Hooghly ) is an approximately 260 km long estuary of the Ganges in the Indian state of West Bengal .

It begins at the confluence of the Bhagirathi , Jalangi and Matabhanga , all also Ganges offshoots in the mouth of the Ganges . The Hugli flows into the Bay of Bengal . The ocean ports of Haldia and Diamond Harbor are located on it . It is navigable with seagoing vessels to Kolkata , which is also located on the Hugli together with Haora . Upstream it is an important traffic artery for the adjacent industrial areas. The Portuguese founded a trading post on the Hugli in 1537, which was important for them until the 17th century. The Rabindra Setu , a landmark of Kolkata, is the most famous bridge over the river.
