The Damodar is a right tributary of the Hugli in the Indian states of Jharkhand and West Bengal .
The Damodar rises on the Chota-Nagpur plateau in Jharkhand at about 700 m . It flows in an easterly direction to West Bengal, then turns south and flows into the Hugli 35 km southwest of Calcutta . The Tenughat and Panachet dams lie along the river . At the lower reaches of the Mundeswari river branches off to the right and later joins the Rupnarajan . The Damodar has a length of 592 km. Larger cities along the river are Phusro , Ramgarh Cantonment , Durgapur and Bardhaman .
Due to countless industrial companies on its banks, which mostly discharge their sewage untreated, the Damodar is one of the most polluted rivers in India.
