Map of the Ganges Delta (1660) |
The Jalangi ( Bengali জলঙ্গী নদী , Hindi जलङ्गी / जलंगी नदी Jalaṅgī nadī ) is an approx. 250 km long and approx. 100 to 200 m wide river in the area of the Ganges delta in the Nadia district in the Indian state of West Bengal . Due to the low gradient in the Ganges delta, it forms a connection between the two main arms of the Ganges, Padma and Hugli . North of the confluence of the Jalangi in the western arm of the Ganges, this is called Bhagirathi , south of it Hugli.
course
The Jalangi has its origin in the eastern arm of the Ganges, the Padma, in the east of the Indian state of West Bengal at a height of approx. 19 m. It flows in numerous loops mainly in a south and south-westerly direction and flows into the Hugli after about 250 km near the city of Mayapur .
Tributaries and reservoirs
The Jalangi has no tributaries; the construction of a reservoir is impossible because of the slight gradient.
Cities
Because of the flooding of the Jalangi, which is possible especially in the monsoon season , places or even cities near the shore are extremely rare. Only the city of Krishnanagar, which has around 170,000 inhabitants, is not far from the mouth on the south bank of the river.
history
The age of the river is unclear, because there have always been changes in its course in the past - but it is drawn fairly precisely on a map from 1660.
