Mayapur is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal with a population of around 20,000 . Here is the headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness ( ISKCON ), to which the Hare Krishna movement also belongs.

location

Mayapur lies in the triangle of mouth between Jalangi and Hugli at a height of approx. 14 m above sea level. d. M. The cities of Nabadwip and Krishnanagar are each only a few kilometers away; The metropolis of Calcutta is located approx. 130 km (driving distance) south.

history

For centuries, Mayapur was only a farming village with around 1000 inhabitants, which only gained worldwide importance with the settlement of the headquarters of the ISKCON movement founded in New York in 1966 . The philosopher and guru Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born here (or in Nabadwip) in 1486 and Bhaktivinoda Thakura built a temple in his honor in the 1880s.

Attractions

Several modern temple buildings and the relaxed, concentrated atmosphere of the Ashram and its surroundings are in stark contrast to the rather hectic life of many Indian cities. Completion of the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium is planned for 2017 or 2018 .
