Nabadwip ( Bengali : নবদ্বীপ , Nabadbīp ) is a city with about 125,000 inhabitants in the Nadia district in the Indian state of West Bengal .
location
Nabadwip is located on the Hugli River about 120 km (driving distance) north of Kolkata at an altitude of about 15 m . The climate is humid; Rain (approx. 1300 mm / year) falls almost exclusively during the summer monsoon season .

Approx. 99% of the population are Hindus and only 0.8% are Muslim ; the small remainder are made up of Christians , Jains and Sikhs . The proportion of male residents exceeds that of female residents by around 10%.
history
In the late 12th century, during the rule of the Sena dynasty , the capital of Bengal was moved from Gaur to Nabadwip. The Sena king Lakshmanasena was defeated in Nabadwip in 1201/1202 by the Muslim conquerors around Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khilji , which marked the beginning of the invasion of Islam in Bengal. The city remained an important center of culture, education and religion until the 16th century and is still a pilgrimage destination for many Krishna devotees.
Attractions
- Today there are numerous modern temples in the city; the most important is the Sonar Gouranga Temple .
- The headquarters of the ISKCON movement is on the opposite bank of the Hugli in Mayapur .
Festivals
Numerous festivals take place in Nabadwip throughout the year - the most important are Rash Utsav , Dol Jatra , Rath Yatra , Jhulan and Gaura Purnima .
Personalities
The Hindu mystic Chaitanya (1486–1533) was born in Nabadwip.
